Never stop editing

Hi everyone,

I wanted to jump on to talk about switching up your spaces, to help them feel new again and why it’s so important to… ‘Never Stop Editing!’

So by editing I mean moving things around when you clean, buying a bunch of flowers now and again, seeing as the hubby won’t, why not treat yourself? Or is that just mine?! Buying some new items to make a room feel new again without the expense of fully redecorating. Also moving accessories around trying them in a different place or even a different room all together.

As humans we strive for the feeling we get when we have something new. Our brains love newness, when we see something new we like or are intrigued by our brains react to the novelty and this realises Dopamine, which then makes us go in search of a reward ( buying something new).

This really isn’t good for the planet we live on and this is why fast fashion has become a huge problem. Why do we need a new outfit every time we go out? or a new pair of shoes, could we dress up an outfit differently with a belt or bag or wear it in a different way, with a different jacket to be able to be seen out in it again and again. It’s the same with our interiors.

We spend so much time in our homes it’s easy to get bored with a space. We don’t necessarily need to go and buy new items straight away. If we are feeling a little bored with a space we can just try moving some accessories around, switch up your shelves for instance by simply styling the accessories differently. This in turn will give you a sense of something new without spending a dime.

Move around your bedside table accessories or buy some accessories if you haven’t styled them already. Some nice flowers, a new lamp or vase.

Your editing doesn’t need to cost a lot, small changes can create a feeling of newness without the need to fully decorate and buy paint, new furniture and blinds etc. Editing actually reframes you from feeling the need to do a full blown redecoration, your space feels new just from moving things around and updating a few accessories, a couple of new cushions here and there and throws can be all you need.

A new rug perhaps over an old floor or carpet to update your bedroom, living room or hallway will help you to fall back in love with a space for a little while longer.

Add a new throw or switch up your throws in the living room and bedrooms to add a different texture or colour to your rooms.

Edit your pictures from time to time, update old pictures of your lovely family, children, pets or places you have visited. Edit your gallery walls to tell new stories and show memories.

You can easily change picture frames and finishes by either painting them yourselves or look around antique and secondhand shops, local independent shops or online for some quirky ones to add interest and coordinate them with your current decor.

Re-paint old furniture to breathe new life into it to complement your current decor instead of replacing it. Wallpapering the back of shelving units looks stunning and creates a real eye catching focal point in a room. Creating something new and unique.

Also changing the handles on old furniture can make a huge difference and doesn’t cost a lot at all but creates something unique and a feeling of newness.

Here’s some we added to an IKEA bedside table, handles from @theseplease, they were a stunning addition to the draws.

In these uncertain times when money needs to be stretched further just for our essential’s and other more important things, we don’t want to be spending too much money on none essential things but we still need to feel happy in our homes, so just starting small, making small edits can give you the newness feeling without the cost.

So to wrap up, I hope this has inspired you to look around your home to see if you can edit it in anyway with items you already have, if you’re bored of seeing something in one room, move it to another and see if it works. Buy a few small accessories to update a room to add texture or a new colour to a space.

Never stop editing!!

Thank you so much for reading, happy editing.
