Narrow spaces
Hello all,
I do hope you’re all well, so this is my first blog of 2023 so I guess I should start with Happy New Year! so sorry it’s been so long and I’ve really missed it but I’ve been super busy with projects and life in general, I turned the big 40 last month it’s been a month of celebration and socialising, no one celebrates for just one day do they?… it turns out to be a month long commitment to going out or even months! Anyway enough about me.
I’ve recently completed a hallway scheme on a renovation project and it’s quite a narrow hallway. Narrow, tight spaces and landing areas can be difficult to style so I thought I’d write about narrow spaces and give you some tips on how to style tight spaces. So if you have any in your home then this is the blog for you, grab a cuppa, take a seat and have a quick read of these tips and tricks to help make your narrow spaces feel bigger.
So this image above is part of the original hallway and has recently had a renovation to extend the hallway (spot the ladders? That’s the new bit) the renovation was also to add more rooms . So below is the new part of the hallway so it’s very long and narrow.
We married up the old and the new spaces with a new lighter colour above the panelling the (old hall was a dark forest green before) this was to add more light to the space as there’re no windows. Then we continued the panelling into the new space, which now feels like it’s always been there! this hallway used to be a bedroom.
What is lucky with this space is we were blessed with very high ceilings, which in itself creates space.
With long spaces you need something to draw the eye to the end of the room a light, pictures, a small table with accessories on, anything to stand out.
Also runners, runners draw your eye away from you and give the illusion of space.
If you can, place a mirror somewhere to bounce some light too as seen above this will be a bonus for you, opposite a door way or near a window (if you’re lucky enough to have a window in your hallway) so it’s planning where best to place a mirror near any natural light.
Also when it comes to styling the walls in a narrow hallway or landing DO NOT hang artwork and accessories on both sides of the walls, this will make it feel like the walls are closing in on you and be too overpowering. Hanging artwork or mirrors on just one side will help with making it feel more spacious.
And last but not least Lighting, one of the most important aspects in design, it’s soooo important some good spotlights are a given but for a less harsh feel wall lighting can be the perfect solution. Now you can even buy battery powered lighting and picture lights like we placed in this hallway, you literally stick them to the wall! This creates a softer feel to the space and also draws your eyes to end of this long narrow hallway highlighting the art work at the end.
Even better with high ceilings Pendants work beautifully too.
So that’s about all the tips I can give you on narrow spaces, I hope it’s been informative and given you some ideas for your spaces or how you can cleverly change a few things to make it feel spacious.
Thank you so much for reading.
Until next time! Take care and happy styling your homes, if you’re in any doubt about your spaces and you need some further help and advice, you know where I am!
